Founded in 1836 as a Royal Mercantile College with only a few chosen members, Technische Universität Chemnitz now looks back to an over 175-year-old history with about 11,000 students in 8 faculties nowadays.The chair Micromanufacturing Technology at the Institute for Machine Tools and Production Processes of Technische Universität Chemnitz combines expert knowledge on the fields of micro and high precision machining processes and innovative process chains for complex and challenging micro or micro-structured parts and surface technologies. The research topics that bear particular relevance to THERMACO are precision and micro cutting (also of AMC material) with defined cutting edges; micro-ECM, micro-EDM and laser ablation; micro forming and Multiphysics simulation. There is a close cooperation with the department of precision and micro manufacturing of the Fraunhofer IWU, which is also headed by Prof. Andreas Schubert.

The University of Bologna, Alma Mater Studiorum, was founded in 1088 and is considered to be the oldest university in Western Europe. Nowadays, it still remains one of the most important institutions of higher education across Europe with more than 85.000 enrolled students, 33 departments and 11 Schools in 5 different Campuses. It successfully participated in FP7 with a total of 262 projects funded by the European Commission in the different specific programmes. CIRI-MAM is the Interdepartmental Centre of Industrial Research on Advanced Mechanics and Materials at the University of Bologna. It was founded in 2011 with the objective of helping industries solve complex problems by using an integrated approach, from the design phase up until the production of innovative components or machines. To this purpose, teams of researchers with different skills and backgrounds are tailored to the specific industrial needs. Typical topics covered by CIRI-MAM range from automation to mechanics of machines, from production technologies to materials, from navigation to toxicology.

The Institute for Ecology of Industrial Areas (IETU), Katowice, Poland is an independent research and development unit acting under the Ministry of Environment established in 1972. IETU has over 40 years’ experience in research and providing services and expertise to local and state authorities, regulators and businesses in the area of environmental management. Research activities especially address supporting decision-making processes aimed at enforcing the sustainability principle in environmental management as well as legal, institutional and organisational settings of environmentally friendly industrial development. IETU is specialized in the field of environmental impact assessment including Life Cycle Assessment and waste management. Under the activities of the Polish Platform for Eco-innovation, the Institute is active in coordination and support actions aimed at facilitating the cooperation between research and businesses in the area of eco-innovation.
